Fort Myers Beach World Championships of Sand Sculpting – 2011

Friday will see most of the carvers getting to the heart of the Fort Myers Beach World Championship competition. Thursday was devoted to the brutal ” pound up ” phase. It is during this crucial period that the artists must ” pound up ” the sand into the wooden forms. Each layer of sand is approximately 3 – 4 inches thick followed by a soaking and pounding with a heavy steel tamper. Take my word on this one – it is brutal. Friday was warmer than usual. The World Championships of Sand Sculpting, being held in Florida for the first time ever will test the strength and artistic skills of artists from all over the world ! It is the second event held on Fort Myers Beach this month.
After the pound up comes the real test of the artists imagination and ability. Each carving is unique and must be completed by the Sunday judging. Time allowed on the sand is strictly governed by the contest format. Master sculptors work solo and must perform all of the intensive manual labor without assistance.
Fort Myers Beach has been host to two national/world level competitions during November ! The qualifiers from the American Sand Sculpting Championships are allowed to compete this week in the 25th Annual World Championships of Sand Sculpting .
Crowds on Fort Myers Beach have been very good for the early days and Friday saw big increase. Thursday was very windy and the night session was cancelled due to high winds. No damage to the sculptures and Friday saw work resume as per thee schedule. As a Fort Myers Beach real estate agent I volunteer for several events and organizations like the annual sand contest. It is my way of giving back to the island I and my family love !
Saturday will see a big push to get the intricate details into the carvings. Visitors will enjoy walking among the artists, taking pictures and chatting with the contestants. You will notice a jar next to each plot of sand allowing you to vote for your favorites. There are plenty of food and merchandize vendors ringing the contest area. Be sure to check them out. They help defray the cost of bringing this spectacular event to our island paradise !
